6/17 Soto to be activated

Geovany Soto was hitless in four at-bats on Sunday with Triple-A Iowa, but the Cubs catcher most likely will be activated Monday from the disabled list. Soto, who has not played since May 17 after undersgoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus, went 3-for-16 in five rehab games in the Minor Leagues. Dale Sveum said Sunday they may carry three catchers, keeping Soto, Steve Clevenger and Welington Castillo when Soto is activated.

“It’s still to be determined but it’s a possibility for a little bit that we might do that (carry three) because Clevenger is so versatile,” Sveum said of the left-handed hitter, who can play first base if needed.

Soto hasn’t been activated for a couple of seasons now. This is so awesome, Clevenger can play first base!!! Woo Hoo, that’s what the team needs, another lefthanded first base option. Would Sveum “rest” LaHair becuase he’s batting “only” .290ish now in favor of the lefthanded Clevenger? Hope not. Try Clevenger in LF if he’s so versatile. I like Clevernger’s bat but to specifically point out that he can play first is a little moot as most players can play first and first base is not an issue. The doubts circling Sveum are beginning to mount and it all started with his coddling of Soriano.

If they keep 3 catchers and one of them can play first base, that means another player who can play that position has to go….. Baker? Let’s hope so…

OK Belgiancubbie….you sold me. Still don’t see a genuine need for Clevenger to get time in at first base as long as LaHair is batting over .270 with power??? Maybe they will play him at 3B because Vitters is “still getting the hang of AAA” 🙂

Well, looking at todays lineup…. Clev at 1B and LaHair in LF… seems like there is something going on. Giving LaHair a taste of LF, keeping Clevingers bat in the lineup and giving Soto some time behind the plate to raise his trade value while at the same time giving Soriano some more time to display his batting power (hey AL-teams, he can DH and you don’t have to worry about his defence) and giving Rizzo some more time in AAA so he can have his daily at bats.

Again, you sold me Belgian. LaHair in the outfield may be where he winds up with the Cubs or another team, Clevenger’s bat stays in the line at the only other position suitable for him other than catcher and Soto behind the plate makes as much sense now as ever since my guy Castillo is NOT taking advantage of his opportunity to stay in the line up as Clevenger has done. And apparently the DH spot agrees with Soriano as he has another homerun, mult-hit game increasing his chances of becoming a FULL TIME DH!!! Way to go Soriano!!! The best thing he can do for us is succeed as a DH during every interleague game!!
