8/1 July numbers

* Anthony Rizzo tied for the Major League lead with eight home runs in July. He scored 19 runs, tied for fourth in the NL in the month.

* Chris Coghlan led the Majors with a .376 batting average in July. The White Sox’s Jose Abreu was second at .374. Coghlan’s batting average was the highest by a Cubs player in July since Michael Barrett batted .386 in 2006.

* Jake Arrieta held opponents to a .168 batting average in July, third lowest in the NL. Matt Garza led the league with a .156 opponent batting average.

    I noticed that the Giants promoted two players yesterday from its AA team. “Sometimes you’ve got to win and develop at the same time,” Sabean said, “and that’s what we’re trying to do.” Hopefully next year the Cubs will be in a pennant race and can call up players like Russell and Schwarber.
